Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted Debuts at No. 1 with $60M

Moviegoers wanted to see more of the animals in Madagascar over the weekend.

The animated sequel Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted earned an estimated 60.4 million dollars to open in first place. Ridley Scott’s Alien semi-prequel Prometheus debuted in the runner-up spot, with 50 million.

Last week’s box office champ, Snow White & the Huntsman, fell to third place, raising 23 million dollars.

Marvel’s The Avengers finished in fifth place, with 10.8 million. It has now earned nearly 572 million at the domestic box office and approximately 1.4 billion worldwide.

The Hunger Games collected 1.1 million to reach the 400-million-mark at the domestic box office.
